Starting and running a business is incredibly hard work. Having a good idea or being good at what you do is no longer the recipe for success. The successful entrepreneur who "winged it" and did well is the exception not the rule.

Business skills such as sales, marketing and a good understanding of finance are needed to stand any chance of doing more than just survive. The great news is that you do not have to come up with a totally new or innovative idea to start a business. Good plumbers, window cleaners, mechanics etc. are much in demand, providing they are business-like and customer focused.

This independently run web site is dedicated to helping you towards achieving your goals. Steven Blake MBA

Steven has helped over eight hundred people to understand, plan and develop their own businesses. He designed a computerised method of evaluating business ideas that by 1999 had been tested by over 400 new business starts.

Steven is able to explain complex business issues clearly and easily and is currently working on his first book "Planning to Succeed". This is aimed at new business start-ups, but will be just as relevant to existing businesses that are finding it difficult to make a decent living.

Testing the Business

Steven has developed a spreadsheet to enable financial testing of business ideas. This is easy to use and includes graphs and summaries for quick analysis. You can download this for free.

Why free?  No catch, Steven developed this to help people in the work he did at the time.  To have developed it into a sellable item would have been too costly, so he could shelve it or give it away. Steven would rather people use it to save them making costly mistakes with start-ups that would not be viable.

As the site develops Steven will post regular tips and extracts from his book.  Eventually the whole book will be available (and you will be able to order and pay for that).

If you wish to give Steven some feedback he would appreciate it.

You need to accept macros when the spreadsheet opens to get the full program.  You may need to alter your options on Excel to reduce security levels to medium.  It will then give you the option to accepts macros when it starts.

Download your choice of file/s - The Business Idea Tester for your idea, and the example if you want to see what it does or have an example to work from.

These Spreadsheets require Microsoft Excel to run them Excel

This Spreadsheet was designed for the UK market and its VAT and Tax systems.  This service is offered on the understanding that Steven cannot accept responsibility for any errors, omissions or losses resulting in use of the program or this site.

As a free download it would not be viable for Steven to adapt it to other currencies and legal systems. Anyone interested in a collaboration to develop a commercial package should contact Steven.
